Help Needed

I was wondering if someone has a rare top 100 year-end survey. But I really need one and especially with WHBQ Memphis, KLIF Dallas, KILT Houston, and KFRC San Francisco. Recently, I got in contact with Elizabeth Walsh and Bruce Portzer. Walsh works for the Seattle Public Library and Portzer is a survey collector and they helped me find the KJR year-end surveys (along with a couple from KOL). Not it's time to add more to the hat. Please contact if you got something from the four cities I mentioned.

Two is a Crowd

Hello there. Today I like to talk about Top 40 rivals. In the 1960's and 70's you were lucky to have a AM music station in the city that you lived in the U.S. and Canada. But to have two at one time was a big deal. So here now is a listing of cities that had two or more stations on the radio:

New York: WABC, WMCA, WNBC, WOR-FM/WXLO (FM)
Boston: WRKO, WMEX, WBZ
Hartford: WDRC, WPOP
Miami: WQAM, WFUN
Louisville, KY: WAKY, WKLO
Cleveland: WIXY, WKYC, WGAR
Detroit: WXYZ, WKNR, CKLW (Windsor)
Chicago: WLS, WCFL, WIND
St. Louis: KXOK, WIL
Minneapolis: WDGY, KDWB (St. Paul)
Dallas: KLIF, KBOX
Seattle: KJR, KOL
San Francisco: KFRC, KYA
Los Angeles: KHJ, KRLA, KFWB

Hello Again

Nice to see you again. You may of heard by now that Ron Lundy-the longtime midday deejay on WABC from 1965 to 1982 died on Monday from a heart attack at the age of 75 at his home in Mississippi. Can you believe he's the third D.J. since last fall to die and having worked at one point at WABC? Jim Nettleton and George Michael were the others. Can you also belive that almost all the D.J.'s that worked there are dead now? Only Dan Ingram, Bruce Morrow, Herb Oscar Anderson, and Harry Harrison are the only notables still living. But why should I care? I'm not much of a WABC fan-I perfer WLS way more.
Coming soon I'll be writing about what were the greatest two station rivals in any city in the U.S. and Canada in the 60's and 70's. I like to announce that I want to start my tribute website to WLS as a music station someday. The address will be www.musicradio89.com (just as WABC's is musicradio77.com) and I have just about all the jingles and special tributes; but way behind on the airchecks. So if anyone has a rare WLS aircheck, contact me. And if anyone has a rare year-end survey to submit, tell it me too. I desperately need the KFRC year-end surveys from the 70's and 80's (1968 too) as of right now. Well I must leave now.

Station With Personality

Well I have returned. It took almost a year but here I go with my discussion of the history of top 40 radio. I've listened to just about all the airchecks from the stations in the U.S. and in Canada from the 60's and 70's and I can tell you that no station towarded more that WLS in Chicago. Why them? Because they had the greatest jingles (Solid Rock from '71-'72 is the best), the greatest people, the best contests, and one of the two best surveys ever (CHUM in Toronto was probably). I must admit WABC, 'LS's brother station, was somewhat okay. There will be more about WLS in the future.

Well my friends, welcome to my new blog. This time I like to focus on my other passion; which is music. Rock and roll music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's through a perspective of Top 40 radio history.
